Description
ANTIQUE CHILDREN’S FASHIONS 1880-1900: A HANDBOOK FOR DOLL COSTUMERSby Hazel Ulseth & Helen Shannon, Hobby House Press, MD, 1988.
This book endeavors “to present a few ideas, illustrations and descriptions which will assist the “home” doll costumers in achieving a finished product with some degree of conformity and authenticity to period costumes contemporary with the manufacture of French Bebes and German bisques. In addition, we believe that many experienced doll costumers will enjoy some new and different approaches to trim, handling of lace and ribbon, styling, fit and some of our “Helpful Handy Home Sewing Hints”…leading to unusual treatment of laces and ribbons, self-fabric ruffles and fluting without a fluter. We emphasize one point throughout our handbook. All doll collectors are aware of the ideal situation in which one has a beautiful antique doll in its perfect original garments. However, we recognize this as a rare situation. For those who cannot achieve this goal we hope, instead, to provide some satisfaction to doll owners by helping them to enjoy dolls enhanced by authentic fabrics and charmingly styled costumes. By all means, keep the old for reference, but enjoy the new.”
